Who we are and what this service is

This site is operated by HomeProjectMatch. We do two things: we give you an estimated cost range for a home project, and we introduce you to independent service professionals who may want the work. We are paid by those professionals. The service is free to you.

The estimate is not a quote

The range you are shown is produced by a calculator from the answers you give and typical costs for this area. It is not an offer, not a bid, and nobody is bound by it — including us. A professional who visits your property may quote something quite different, and the more your project differs from the ordinary case, the more likely that is.

Where your answers do not narrow down what the job actually is, we show a wide range and say so on the page rather than picking a confident figure from the middle. Please read that notice when it appears; it is there because a precise wrong number is worse than an honest vague one.

We are not a contractor, and we do not check anyone's credentials

We do not perform home improvement work, we do not supervise it, and we are not a party to whatever agreement you reach with a professional. That agreement is between the two of you.

More importantly: we do not check, confirm or endorse any professional's registration, insurance, qualifications, workmanship or business practices. Being introduced through this site is not a recommendation and says nothing about competence. Deciding whom to hire, and doing the checking that decision deserves, is yours.

Before you hire anyone in Pennsylvania, at a minimum:

1. Check their registration under the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act at the Attorney General's public register. Most contractors doing more than $5,000 of home improvement work a year are required to be registered, and the register is free to search.

2. Ask for their certificate of insurance and confirm it directly with the insurer named on it.

3. Get the contract in writing before work begins, and understand what it says about changes and cancellation.

4. Ask who is pulling the permit. Permits here are issued by your municipality, and sewage and well permits by the county.

If something goes wrong with work arranged through this site, you can complain to us and we will take it seriously — including removing a professional from the service. But your remedies for the work itself lie against the person who did it, and you can also complain to the Pennsylvania Attorney General.

What you agree to

• To give us accurate information. An estimate built from wrong answers is wrong, and a professional who buys an introduction to a project that does not exist has been sold nothing.

• That you are at least 18 and are the property owner, or are authorised to arrange work on it.

• That you will not use the site to send anything unlawful, to impersonate somebody else, or to collect information about our users or the professionals on it.

• That anything you upload — photographs in particular — is yours to upload, and that you allow us to use it for the purpose of estimating your project and passing it to professionals considering it.

Please do not put anything in the description box that you would not want a professional to receive. We keep contact details out of what professionals see before they pay, but the description is about your project and is meant to be read.

Contacting you

When you submit a request, you agree that we and participating professionals may contact you about it by phone, text message or email. Message and data rates may apply. You can stop text messages by replying STOP, and can ask us to stop contacting you at any time — see the SMS Terms and the Privacy Policy. Consent to be contacted is not a condition of buying anything.

For service professionals

Professionals who buy introductions do so under a separate agreement covering pricing, territory, how many professionals may receive a given project, and the process for disputing an introduction that was not what it appeared to be. In summary: an introduction is a right to contact a homeowner, it is not a promise of work, and payment is for the introduction rather than for any outcome.

Availability

We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the service. We try to keep it running and make no promise that it always will be.

Disclaimers and the limit of our responsibility

The service is provided as it is. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, and we are not responsible for the acts or omissions of any professional you are introduced to, for the quality, timing, safety or legality of work they perform, or for anything they say to you.

To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability to you for anything arising out of this service is limited to the amount you paid us, which for homeowners is nothing, and we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss. Some states do not allow these limits, in which case they apply to you only as far as that state permits.

Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law — including for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

If we disagree

These terms are governed by the law of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts serving Bucks County County, Pennsylvania, and we each agree to those courts.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, and will change the date at the top when we do. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it. If a change is substantive, we will say so more prominently than a date.
