Privacy Policy

The short version

HomeProjectMatch is free for homeowners because service professionals pay us for the introduction. That is the whole business model, and it is the thing worth understanding before you read anything else: when you complete a project request and a professional buys it, your name, phone number, email address and street address are passed to that professional. That is the point of the service, not a side effect of it. Everything below is detail.

What we collect

What you tell us about your project

The description you write, your answers to the questions we ask, any photographs you choose to upload, and the postal code and address of the property. None of this requires an account.

How to reach you

Your name, phone number, email address, how you would prefer to be contacted, roughly when you want the work done, and whether you are interested in financing.

A record of your consent

When you submit a request, we store the exact wording you were shown, the version of that wording, the time, the page you were on, your IP address and your browser's user-agent string. We keep the text itself rather than a pointer to our current wording, so that a record from last year says what you actually agreed to rather than what we happen to say today.

How the site is used

Which steps you reach and what you click, held against a random identifier stored in your browser for the length of the visit. Where you arrived from, including any campaign parameters in the link. We deliberately keep names, phone numbers and addresses out of this record.

If you use a link we send you to return to an unfinished request, that link contains a token that identifies your request for 30 days.

Who receives it

Before a professional pays

Professionals browsing available projects see the town and postal code, the kind of work, roughly when you want it done, the estimated range, how many photographs there are, and a summary of your answers. They do not see your name, your phone number, your email address or your street address, and the summary they see is assembled from your answers rather than quoted from what you wrote — so a phone number typed into the description box does not reach them that way either.

After a professional pays

Your name, phone number, email address, preferred contact method and street address are released to that professional. By default a project request may be sold to up to three professionals; some are sold to one exclusively. We will tell you which applies at the time.

Once a professional has your details, what they do with them is governed by their own privacy practices, not ours. We can stop sending you further introductions. We cannot make a professional you have already been introduced to forget your number.

Companies that process data for us

• Google (Firebase and Google Cloud) — where the database, the uploaded photographs and the background jobs live.

• Vercel — where the website itself runs.

• Anthropic — the description you write and the answers you give are sent to an AI service to work out which trade your project belongs to and to read your replies into the right fields. It is not used to decide anything about you personally.

• A messaging provider, if and when text messaging is switched on, to deliver those messages.

• Google Analytics, if it is configured, receives the same usage events described above.

Whether this counts as selling your information

We do not sell personal information to advertisers or to data brokers. We are, however, paid by service professionals for the introduction — and under several state privacy laws, a disclosure made for money can be treated as a sale or a sharing of personal information regardless of what it is called. We would rather say so here than argue about the label. If you would like us not to pass your details on, do not submit a project request, or write to us and we will remove you.

We also disclose information where the law requires it, and we would transfer it to a buyer if the business were ever sold.

How long we keep it

Project requests, the resulting introductions and the records of what professionals bought are business records and are kept accordingly. Consent records are kept for as long as we may need to show what was agreed, and are never edited — a correction is a new record alongside the old one. Photographs are kept with the project they belong to. Usage events are kept in aggregate.

You can ask us to delete what we hold about you, and we will, subject to the records we are required to keep and to anything a professional already received before you asked.

What you can ask for

• A copy of what we hold about you.

• A correction, if something is wrong.

• Deletion, subject to the paragraph above.

• That we stop contacting you — by replying STOP to a text message, by using the unsubscribe link in an email, or by writing to us. We apply that across every channel we control.

Pennsylvania does not currently have a general consumer privacy statute. Several other states do, and if you live in one of them those rights apply to you regardless of where we are. Ask us either way; we do not intend to make you prove your postcode first.

Children

This service is for adults arranging work on property. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we will delete it.

Security

Contact details are held so that they are released to a professional only once a purchase record exists, and the code that decides what a professional may see is built as a list of what is allowed out rather than a list of what is held back — so a field added later is invisible until somebody deliberately adds it. Access to the administrative side requires a staff account. No arrangement is proof against everything, and we would rather describe ours than claim more for it.

Changes

If we change this policy we will change the date at the top. Where a change is substantive and affects information already collected, we will do more than that.
