Aluminum wiring: how to tell, and what actually fixes it
If your house went up between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s, there is a real chance the branch circuits are aluminum rather than copper. That is not a reason to panic and it is not something to ignore, and the difference between those two responses is a specific repair with a specific name.

Why this matters here in particular
It comes down to when these counties were built. Housing from 1960 to 1979 makes up 29.1% of the stock in Bucks County and 24.3% in Montgomery — the single largest cohort in Bucks and the second largest in Montgomery. That is the exact window in which aluminum branch wiring was installed.
Not every house from that period has it. But the period is large here, so the question is worth asking rather than assuming.
What the measured risk actually is
The Consumer Product Safety Commission studied this rather than estimating it. Their finding: homes built before 1972 that were wired with aluminum branch circuits are 55 times more likely to have one or more connections reach what the CPSC calls Fire Hazard Conditions than homes wired in copper.
The mechanism is the connection, not the wire. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper as it heats and cools, it oxidises differently, and it creeps under the pressure of a screw terminal. Over decades a connection loosens, resistance rises, the joint heats, and the loosening accelerates. The wire in the wall is usually fine. The terminations at outlets, switches and splices are where it goes wrong.
How to tell
Check the date. Wiring from roughly 1965 to the mid-1970s is the window worth investigating.
Look at the cable jacket where it is visible — in the basement, the attic or at the panel. Cable containing aluminum is typically marked AL or ALUMINUM along the sheath.
Look at an exposed conductor. Aluminum is silver-grey through its whole thickness; copper is unmistakable next to it.
Symptoms worth taking seriously: warm cover plates, outlets or switches that work intermittently, a faint smell of hot plastic, flickering not explained by the bulb.
One caution. Aluminum was also used legitimately for the large service entrance conductors and for some major-appliance circuits, and still is. Finding aluminum at the meter does not mean the branch circuits are aluminum. It is the ordinary 15 and 20 amp circuits feeding outlets and lights that this article is about.
The three repairs the CPSC accepts
This is the part worth knowing before anyone quotes you, because there are more ways to do this wrong than right.
Replace the branch circuits with copper. Complete and permanent, and the most disruptive and expensive. In a house being rewired for other reasons anyway, it is often the sensible moment.
COPALUM crimp. A copper pigtail joined to the aluminum conductor with a specialised crimp tool. The CPSC treats it as a permanent repair. The tool is restricted, so availability depends on who works in your area.
AlumiConn connector. A set-screw connector that joins aluminum to a copper pigtail, torqued to specification. Also accepted as a permanent repair, and more widely available than the crimp.
What the CPSC says not to accept
Two common approaches are explicitly not endorsed as permanent repairs:
Ordinary twist-on wire connectors. Pigtailing with a standard wire nut is not a permanent fix, and the CPSC says so directly.
Swapping in CO/ALR devices. Replacing outlets and switches with CO/ALR-rated ones is better than leaving them, but the CPSC does not treat it as a permanent repair either — and it does nothing for splices inside junction boxes, which are part of the problem.
If a quote proposes either of those as the solution, it is worth asking the contractor directly which of the three accepted repairs they are using and why they are not.
If you are already having panel work done
Worth knowing that Pennsylvania adopted the 2020 National Electrical Code on 1 January 2026, and Article 230.67 means a panel replacement now also has to include a whole-house surge-protective device. If aluminum branch wiring and an old panel are both on the list, doing them together saves a second round of permits and a second visit.

Common questions
Does aluminum wiring mean I cannot get homeowners insurance?
It does not automatically, but insurers vary and some will ask about it or price it differently. A documented repair using one of the three methods the CPSC accepts is what insurers generally want to see, so keep the paperwork.
Do I have to rewire the whole house?
No. Full copper replacement is one of three repairs the CPSC accepts. The other two — COPALUM crimps and AlumiConn connectors — pigtail copper onto the existing aluminum at each connection and are treated as permanent, without opening every wall.
Is aluminum wiring illegal now?
Aluminum branch wiring is not illegal and existing installations are not required to be removed. Aluminum is still used routinely for service entrance conductors and some large appliance circuits. The concern is specifically about the terminations on small branch circuits in homes of that era.
